Walking fast through the various halls and rooms, I keep ducking and running and scouting for ambushes. I expect at any moment to hear a shot ring out and feel the bullet pierce my skin. If that damned Muruks is tenacious enough to hunt us even after he tumbled down a mountainside inside his broken tank, then he will doubtlessly follow us into this ancient structure under the ice.

And that’s exactly what I want. Down here, I’m on equal terms with him. He has no advantage in these strange surroundings. I would guess that he doesn’t even like this place. If he did, surely he would set up some kind of presence here. It is, after all, quite a pleasant site. I can set up an ambush of my own.

The small, winged creatures run to and fro, still making large arcs around me as they pass. I don’t think we can expect a lot of help from them.

But at the very least Kaila should be safe for now while I finish the hit.

I had to get away from her for a while. My mind can’t function when she’s near. All my thought processes are interrupted by images of her naked body, the memory of her scent and her sounds, the unique taste of her slit and the softness of her skin. I’ve had many extraordinary experiences in my life, but what Kaila and I did back in the tower was beyond everything else. Beyond any successful hit, beyond any frenzy. Far beyond, totally incomparable. Unforgettable in every way.

And worst of all, I can’t bear the thought of not having it again.

“Damned Void, what did she do to me?” I seethe.

One of the winged creatures stands in my path and doesn’t move. Looking around quickly, I notice all of them standing still all around me, hundreds of them staring with their dark eyes. It doesn’t look like an attack, but it could be the preamble to one.

I come to a stop. “May I pass, little avian?”

He looks up at me, still not budging. The others stand still, too. It could be a tense situation, and with aliens you don’t know how fast they can turn on you and try to bite or sting or eat you. I’m so outnumbered now that if they have something like that in mind, I’ll struggle to survive.

“I can of course walk around you, if you prefer that,” I tell him, pretty sure he doesn’t understand a word.

He takes a couple of cautious steps closer and slowly puts a paw up on my knee. There are claws, but they’re not sharp and the touch is feather light.

If this is a predator move on his part, I don’t have much of a defense against it. I slowly squat down so I’m closer to him. “What can I do for you?”

He puts the other paw on my knee and just stares, tilting his head to the side. “Mrrr goonklimmmkkkrrr,” he softly sings.

I get the feeling he’s trying to tell me something.
